Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(1756 - 1791)
The year 2006 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – probably the best known Austrian of all time. Famous for his innumerable compositions, the musical genius was feted like an international pop star even in the 18th century. During the course of his brief, but extremely productive life, Mozart comprised 626 works, the first at the tender age of 5, the last on his deathbed. Although he was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1756 and spent the first 25 years of his life there, Vienna was the city where Mozart achieved his greatest successes.
In 1762, for example Mozart at the age of six played his first concert in the hall of mirrors at Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna in the presence of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresia. From 1781 until his death in 1791 Mozart lived mainly in Vienna where, in 1782 at the age of 26, married the twenty-year-old Constanze Weber in St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
